Iowa Women of Today:
The Supreme court ruled in July of 1984 that the U.S. Jaycees must admit women as full members. In reaction to that, the U.S. Jaycee Women organization was dissolved as of July 1, 1985.
In June of 1985, representatives from 25 Jaycee Women chapters across Iowa met in Fort Dodge. They wanted to form their own autonomous women's organization. Thus, the Iowa Women of Today was founded. A constitution and by-laws were adopted and elections held. Thelma Austin of Fort Dodge was the first president. Three Vice-presidents were elected--Community Involvement, Personal Development and Management. The U.S. Women of Today was formed, with Iowa being a charter member. |
